the late november earnings report was fairly good. they upticked guidance. with the consumer spending scare, no one is in a hurry to take the prosperity seriously. the bounce attempt off $27 is $6-ish at the high point, but i will not chase it!

This is an interesting thesis. Over the long run I think DKS will continue to be a winner, but in the short run I think your theory could prove to be a winner.

I am always torn on this one; we have Dicks in Michigan and the store near me is nearly always empty. That said, it has all the gear you could ever want, the design of the store is nice, but its pricey. And its in a fragmented market, and it plays on the ‘regional to national’ theme. That said, the Best Buy half a mile away is packed to the gills 24/7 and Dicks has about 8-10 people in it whenever I venture in. Strange.

Looks like lots of selling on DKS yesterday and today. Another retailer that seems to be suffering from seasonal weakness at least partly related to the warmer weather is CHRS, take a look at it if you have a moment. Lowered sales outlook, really taking it on the chin. From what I’ve seen and read, retailers are a good short right now.

I focus on options and the puts on CHRS are less inflated than DKS so I’m hitting those right now. But if you’re able to short straight shares I can see why you’d go after DKS.

Thats probably a fair assessment. In a perfect world, I can short ahead of those deep dips and then you can buy as I’m covering at the low. If only it were always that easy…

it seems as though in the past 2 year DICK’s has emerged as the category leader in this industry sub-space. some believe that it has 5 years of big expansion growth ahead of itself. on this premise, i believe deep dip buys would be rewarding.
